Remembering Professor Nigel Dunnett

It's with sadness that we share the news that Professor Nigel Dunnett — one of the most beloved and influential figures in the gardening world — passed away peacefully on Sunday 26 April 2026, after a battle with cancer. He was 63.

Here at Garden Yard, we're a small team that genuinely loves everything about growing things. So when news like this breaks, it feels personal — even if we only knew Nigel through his extraordinary work.

For those unfamiliar with his name, you'll almost certainly know what he created. The sweeping wildflower meadows at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The Tower of London Superbloom. Six gold-medal gardens at Chelsea. Urban landscapes across the UK transformed from grey concrete into living, breathing ecosystems. His Pictorial Meadows project — a colourful, low-maintenance approach to urban meadows — has since been adopted in cities worldwide, including here in Australia.

What made Nigel special wasn't just his talent. It was his belief that beauty and biodiversity belong together — that a well-planted space could lift a city, support wildlife, and move people all at once. That's a philosophy we think anyone who loves their garden understands instinctively.

Our thoughts are with his wife Marta, his family, and the many students and colleagues whose lives he shaped.

The meadows he planted will keep blooming long after us all.
